Helias Catholic to welcome therapy dog to campus in 2026

A therapy dog will join the Helias Catholic High School family in 2026 to help provide a calm and comforting presence to students.
The school is partnering with Therapy Paws to introduce a certified therapy dog to campus with the support of Diamond Pet Foods. The Jefferson City nonprofit offers comfort and emotional support to individuals through its trained canine-handler teams.
According to a news release, bringing in a therapy dog reinforces the school's focus on its students' social, emotional and mental well-being, helping to ease anxiety and support emotional regulation.
"This partnership reflects our mission to educate the whole person -- mind, body and spirit," said Krista Hale, a Helias counselor and the handler of therapy dog Hattie Mae.
Hattie Mae, a Bernedoodle, has spent the past year in training at Mid-MO Dog Training in Jefferson City, and will offer support to students during times of academic stress, emotional challenges and daily school life. Therapy Paws worked with Hale to guide her in handling Hattie Mae.
"Working with Therapy Paws allows us to provide a safe, structured and effective program that supports our students in meaningful ways," Hale said.
According to a news release, the school is ensuring that staff members are putting clear protocols in place to support the comfort, safety and health of all students and staff, including those with allergies or sensitivities.
