From Start to Finish: A Season of Potential

As another track season at Helias Catholic begins, the team is already showing signs of strength, growth, and potential. With a mix of experienced returners and talented newcomers, this year’s roster is one to watch.
According to Coach Leslie Verslues, the early part of the season has been encouraging.
“We have a great group of returning athletes who contributed to our success last season, as well as an outstanding group of new athletes to our team,” she said.
Coming off a successful year that included district and state championships for both the boys and girls teams, expectations are high, and leadership is strong across the board. Several returning All-State performers are expected to help guide the team both on and off the track.
Preseason training has focused heavily on conditions and preparation. The goal is not just to build strength, but also to avoid injuries and set athletes up for long-term success.
“Our main preseason focus is to get everyone into shape leading into the season so we can
prevent injuries and be off and running when the season starts,” Verslues explained.
Of course, the start of the season doesn’t come without its challenges. Unpredictable weather can make it difficult to consistently practice outdoors, but the team has adapted well so far. Despite a few indoor workout days, the athletes have stayed focused and committed.
Beyond physical training, mental preparation is also a priority. Confidence plays a major role in performance, and the coaching staff works to build both.
“The better they are prepared physically, the more confident they will be mentally when they step on the track and field to compete,” Verslues said. “Head Coach Phil Pitts adds lots of energy and motivation to fuel the team with a positive and encouraging environment,” Verslues added.
Looking ahead, Coach Verslues is excited to see what all the new athletes can do on the track. She is also excited to see how the relay teams develop, because they are always a strength for Helias Catholic in the postseason meets.
